The Scaffolders
Oil on canvas, 70 × 90 cm
In The Scaffolders, vivid brushstrokes and layered textures transform a scene of everyday labour into a meditation on resilience and reconstruction. The composition unfolds across the rooftops of a small Black Forest town, where three men assemble a scaffolding beside a traditional house. Each gesture — deliberate yet fluid — captures the rhythm of human effort, rendered through a vibrant palette that oscillates between the warmth of the earth and the clarity of the sky.
Laime’s brushwork here is expressive yet controlled, revealing both structure and spontaneity. The chromatic harmony of reds, greens, and blues carries an emotional resonance: the warmth of belonging intertwined with the cool weight of endurance. The crisp geometry of the scaffolding contrasts with the organic undulation of the hills, suggesting a dialogue between order and nature — construction and contemplation.
At the base of the structure, the central figure — modelled after the artist himself — grounds the scene with quiet determination. His posture, bent in concentration, symbolizes the human drive to rebuild amid uncertainty. Created during the early months of the pandemic, the work reflects a moment when physical labor became both a necessity and a metaphor: a means of regaining balance through creation, one piece at a time.
This painting is part of Tales of the Black Forest, a series that weaves together landscapes and personal experience to explore the human condition within the natural and emotional depths of the Black Forest — where solitude, resilience, and light find new forms through colour and gesture.
