Icarus Plans
Oil on canvas | 50 × 70 cm
Set in the dense light of a forest clearing, Icarus Plans unfolds as a scene of solitude and quiet persistence. Amid the luminous greens and yellows of the trees, a man crouches near the ground, gathering branches. Behind him, the broken remains of an aircraft lie scattered —a modern echo of Icarus’ fall.
Formally, the painting juxtaposes vibrant color and fractured structure. The brushwork, loose yet deliberate, turns the landscape into a mosaic of sensations —light splintered through foliage, emotion refracted through color. The forest, with its pulsating rhythm of greens and golds, envelops both ruin and renewal. Within this space, nature becomes both witness and participant: it absorbs human failure and offers the possibility of reconstruction.
Psychologically, the work captures a tension between collapse and regeneration. The aircraft wreck suggests ambition thwarted, while the figure’s calm focus on collecting wood and crafting his wing-like structure evokes an instinct to rebuild —a determination to reimagine flight from the remains of loss. The tent to the side reinforces the idea of temporary shelter, a pause before renewal. The myth of Icarus is not treated here as tragedy, but as a cycle of fall and resilience —the enduring desire to rise again, wiser and more grounded.
Created at the onset of the pandemic, the painting reflects the artist’s contemplation of survival and creative continuity amid global uncertainty. The construction of the wooden wings becomes a metaphor for that process: the act of reclaiming the tools of flight, not to escape, but to persist —to continue shaping meaning in the aftermath of disruption.
Part of Tales of the Black Forest, this painting continues the series’ exploration of the forest as a mirror of inner life. Here, the Black Forest becomes a mythic space —a realm where failure, hope, and the instinct to rebuild coexist beneath the shifting canopy of colour and light.
