Autumn in Hörden

this painting captures the vivid transformation of the forest as it shifts into its autumnal palette. Inspired by the artist’s walks through the woodlands surrounding Hörden, the painting conveys the immediacy of being beneath the canopy, looking up through layers of colour and light. The towering tree at the centre becomes a kind of seasonal beacon: its crown glows with yellows, oranges, and warm reds, while the lower branches remain alive with late-summer greens.

The composition rises vertically, echoing the natural ascent of the trees and drawing the viewer’s gaze into the upper reaches of the foliage. This upward movement is reinforced by the vigorous impasto, where strokes of thickly applied paint catch the light and emphasise the tactility of leaves, bark, and shifting shadows. The dense layering of pigment lends the scene a sculptural presence, almost as if the forest were pushing forward from the surface of the canvas.
