Description
Celebration N°6
Oil on canvas 40 x 40 cm (round format)
In Celebration No. 6, the male figure occupies the centre of the circular canvas, rising from an intensely close foreground that heightens the sense of immersion. The round format functions almost like a vessel or mandala, drawing the gaze inward and creating an enveloping composition with no corners and no visual escape. Diagonal lines formed by the arms and the rim of the bath guide the viewer towards the upturned face, the point of greatest emotional openness.
The brushwork, candid and visibly textured, builds the body through warm planes vibrating between reds, oranges, and pinks, giving the flesh a vivid, pulsing presence. The background, dominated by glowing yellows and the rhythmic repetition of small flames, sets a luminous counterpoint suggesting both physical heat and inner exaltation. Light does not stem from a single source; instead, it seems to emanate from multiple points, intensifying the atmosphere of intimate ritual.
In the foreground, the figure reclines with ease, the hand unmistakably enclosing the penis, integrating the masturbatory gesture without modesty into a scene of calm and conscious pleasure. The painting is not positioned as a straightforward erotic display but as an exploration of self-presence — of the act of celebrating oneself through the body. The tension between surrender and awareness — accentuated by the tilt of the neck, the implied breath, and the warm chromatic pulse — places the scene within a register of almost ceremonial delight.
Created within the Archaic series, the work carries gentle echoes of self-portraiture, subtly blurring the boundary between artist and subject. Far from situating the piece in a confessional mode, this understated layer contributes a note of emotional authenticity, strengthening the idea of celebration as a universal archetype: the intimate right to inhabit one’s own body with fullness.
